Re: CL find....steam engine.. In BOISE,too far for me

That looks like it could be a nice engine for someone if the boiler is not shot. One of the Case experts will have to id it for sure, but it looks alot like the 45 in the city park here in town.

Re: CL find....steam engine.. In BOISE,too far for me

Appears to be a 1910 45Hp. we used a 1910 60 boiler like this on our 20 with long smoke box but lap still on the left. first year for long smoke box. but we were able to shorten our smokebox to go with the old parts. Most 1910 75s had the lap up on the right. but seemed to take one more year for the smaller engines.
pretty complete looking unit. even some drawbar and back end stuff to work with.

Re: CL find....steam engine.. In BOISE,too far for me

I looked up their site. It is internet bid only. The engine currently has 25 bids with the highest at $2925. There is what appears to be an original style 2 wheeled tender after it. Its 12 bids have it up to $65.Craigslist steam engine... In BOISE, too far for me (10)

http://pickettauctions.auctionflex....d=0&archive=n&lso=lotnumasc&pagenum=1&lang=En

At those prices, it could be worth obtaining as lawn art....Craigslist steam engine... In BOISE, too far for me (11)

The real question is: Does anyone know the engine's history or close enough to inspect it before Wed?

Re: CL find....steam engine.. In BOISE,too far for me

Seems pretty cheap to me. I agree with Colin, a bobtail 45 horse with an original trailer. All for the steering gear is there, its probably worth more than the engine... I would think the steerable trailer would bring that by itself. Clearly the boiler is completely gone, you can see the flues are removed and the corrosion has eaten completely through the flue sheet in the smokebox. The bobtail is gone, something unoriginal in its place. The guards are gone, pretty much everything that could be unbolted is gone. At 3K there is some room to build a new boiler and perhaps still come out OK.
It really depends on what else is there and the condition. I wouldn't be surprised to see a bit more by the time its done, just because of the trailer.

Re: CL find....steam engine.. In BOISE,too far for me

Ok Colin 1910 45Hp sound about right, the first things i saw was the older axles and smokestack. It has a newer steering wheel, the old stye preheater, 36 flues, no water pump, the position of the steam dome is to the rear of the boiler a waters 2" governor and a Gould balance valve. Is this balance valve common?

Tender listing - In BOISE,too far for me

Looking again at the auction, it appears that there are two tenders? Or is the trailer is selling separately from the engine, and it selling for $75.00? I can't tell. One looks like it has cables and the other doesn't.

The steering gear is left on the front axle and on the side of the firebox on the engine. Hopefully whoever is buying the engine would part with the set up if there is only one tender.

---------- Post added at 02:10 PM ---------- Previous post was at 01:36 PM ----------

The engine came from Lodgepole Nebraska and has been in Idaho since 1969. The Nebraska owners were the original owners. The smoke box is not original to the engine, it has been replaced, but the welding is not completed. That is why there is the seam where daylight is coming through.

I spoke to the auctioneer, there is only one trailer, it does not come with the engine and he is removing the photos of it from the engine listing.

For Chuck, The serial number on the boiler is 62x51 the x is not readable.

I think the dish steering wheel came about 1907/8. and im not sure on the hoop on the front axel that Mike mentioned. i think its original for a 1910 45 or 60, but pretty sure a 1910 75wouldn't have it. you see the odd case engine with balanced valve, but not too many. 3Case i think it still has the older type more square bobtail tender on it. another thing im not exactly sure on the cutoff. most engine of this age have full bunkers or something home made on the back of them. i need to get my own parts book to go through, dads are getting worn out!
Here's a scan from the 1912 catalog. must have been a later 1911 engine with the new steel heater, but still has the square front axel.

Re: CL find....steam engine.. In BOISE,too far for me

Well - internet chatter is making the auctioneer more money. This morning when I looked the tender pics were with the engine. Now the tender is off by itself. More than likely they came together but now they willl probably be seperated. What a shameCraigslist steam engine... In BOISE, too far for me (19)

3case - 2:00 p.m, you mention the tender is worth as much as the engine. Post at 4:30 you talked to him and all of a sudden the tender is now being sold by itself. Autioneeers are not dumb - when someone says the tender is worth as much as the engine what would do??

Quiet talk is the best sometimes

Re: Tender listing - In BOISE,too far for me

[/COLOR]For Chuck, The serial number on the boiler is 62x51 the x is not readable.

That wouldn't make sense for a boiler #... 6251 itself could be close but adding 11000 only pushs the serial # to the 17k range and i think its a bit later than 1906:shrug: but i can see now in Zacks pictures that smokebox is welded on. so there's no way to know if its a 1910 boiler, or just made to appear that way. Its got the older lock nuts on the axels, and old levers and valve gear which would be more 1909 or older.

Re: CL find....steam engine.. In BOISE,too far for me

Is it just me or is the firebox bagged a little bit down towards the bottom? Can't tell for sure, but that's what it LOOKS like in the pics..... Craigslist steam engine... In BOISE, too far for me (29) The stays in the crown sure have lots of threads on 'em....could be a really nice boiler......COULD be......

Anyone else notice the sweet little 5 bottom gang plow for sale in the same auction? Craigslist steam engine... In BOISE, too far for me (30) That'd be a neat piece to have, that's for sure! Craigslist steam engine... In BOISE, too far for me (31)

Re: CL find....steam engine.. In BOISE,too far for me

I don't like how now they are going to take of the steering brackets for the water tender. If it came on this unit it should be sold with this unit. Its funny too how now the description changed to a 1910 45 hp
